Akathisia

Akathsia
This is akathisia. And these are real people experiencing it.
Akathisia is a medication-induced neurological disorder that can cause an overwhelming feeling of inner restlessness, agitation, and an inability to stay still.
It can be incredibly distressing, devastating, and life-altering for the person experiencing it.
Akathisia can occur after starting, increasing, decreasing, stopping, or changing certain medications.
Doctors often miss it or mistake it for anxiety, agitation, mania, worsening psychiatric symptoms, or other conditions.
None of these individuals were warned about akathisia by their doctor when they were prescribed these medications.
Akathisia needs to be recognized. It needs to be taken seriously.
If a medication can cause akathisia, patients deserve to be informed about that risk.
September 20 is International Akathisia Awareness Day.
It is a day to educate, raise awareness, remember those who have suffered and honor those we have lost—all in an effort to help prevent others from experiencing the same prescribed harm.
