Bernice Eddy, virologist. In 1954, while testing Salk’s polio vaccine, she found her monkeys paralyzed and traced it to specific lots. She warned her superiors, brought photographs, and was dismissed. They released those lots anyway. That was the Cutter incident: tens of thousands of children exposed to live virus straight from the vaccine, hundreds paralyzed, some dead. Rather than being honored, she lost her lab.
She wasn’t done. In 1960, she found the monkey kidney cells used to grow the vaccine were giving hamsters tumors, a cancer-causing virus, later named SV40 (still in Vax today causing LOTS OF brain tumors) riding along in doses already given to tens of millions. She was told to keep quiet. She spoke anyway, was demoted, and lost her lab a second time.
Scientists are still arguing about whether SV40 turns up in human cancers today. And Cutter? No accountability. Its assets grew 80% in the years after the disaster. Bayer absorbed it in 1974, the same Bayer that would later swallow Monsanto and its glyphosate, which brings us to today. She was punished for being right. They were rewarded for being wrong. This is still happening.
Think of the thing you are most terrified of and then being hated for having that fear. When you know more about public health history, you might still choose to get vaccinated, but you might think twice before hating someone for not trusting the people in charge of the science.
