A Bottle of Water Lights Homes in Phiippines

Thousands of homes in the Philippines are being lit for the first time ever – simply by inserting a recycled plastic bottle filled with water into their roofs!
Many impoverished Filipino families live without electricity, so they either light their homes using potentially deadly kerosene lamps or simply have nowhere they can work or study. These people are now finding their lives improved through the brainwave of one man, MIT student Illac Diaz, who came up with the idea of filling a plastic bottle with water and bleach and inserting it through a hole in the roof. The water and plastic work together to diffract the natural light into all corners of the room below, while the bleach keeps the water clean.
Diaz has started a movement called 1 Liter of Light (Isang Litrong Liwanag) to put one million of the bottle lights into houses across the Philippines.
