A number of memes and blogs claimed United States President Harry S. Truman said “you can’t get rich in politics unless you’re a crook.” That quote appeared to be — at best — a paraphrase of a 1954 diary entry, in which Truman wrote that an “honest public servant can’t become rich in politics.”
