Have fruits and vegetables become less nutritious?

Veggies In Soil

One of the most dangerous myths I hear is, “You can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from eating a good diet.” This may or may not have been true 100 or 200 years ago but if it ever was true, it is certainly no longer the case.

Please do not take my word for it. This point is most definitely one you should read up on until you have your own certainty on it.

And then take action each week to ensure your nutrient intake is adequate to preserve your health and provide the energy you need.

Today’s Foods Lack Yesterday’s Nutrition

Fruits and vegetables sold in Canadian supermarkets today contain far fewer nutrients than they did 50 years ago, according to an analysis conducted by The Globe and Mail and CTV News.

Vital vitamins and minerals have dramatically declined in some popular foods, including potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and apples, the analysis reveals. Take the potato, by far the most consumed food in Canada. The average spud has lost 100 per cent of its vitamin A, which is important for good eyesight; 57 per cent of its vitamin C and iron, a key component of healthy blood; and 28 per cent of its calcium, essential for building healthy bones and teeth. It also lost 50 per cent of its riboflavin and 18 per cent of its thiamine. Of the seven key nutrients measured, only niacin levels have increased.

The story is similar for 25 fruits and vegetables that were analyzed. But Health Canada refused to comment on the findings, saying the debate was an academic one. The academics, for their part, are intrigued, but not alarmed. Modern farming methods, long-haul transportation and crop-breeding practices are all believed to be contributing to the drop in vitamins and minerals.

Therefore supplementation can be very effective in increasing health and reducing disease, and from a very early age!

A recent review looked at 45 years of research on the protective effect of prenatal vitamin supplementation on the frequency of childhood cancer. It concluded that “maternal ingestion of prenatal multivitamins is associated with a decreased risk for pediatric brain tumors, neuroblastoma, and leukemia.”(3) Vitamin supplements reduced the chance of a brain tumor by 27 percent. Vitamins lowered children’s leukemia risk by 39 percent. Risk of neuroblastoma was cut in half. From: http://www.annieappleseedproject.org/prremocapaea.html
