Under ten minutes and well worth watching for the big picture.

Senator Rex Patrick versus Government Secrecy

Chained Folder

On 20 March I updated you on my fight with the Prime Minister to have the secrecy blanket over National Cabinet discussions – which seems to cover meetings of doctors, meetings of gas officials – declared as unlawful.

Early last month the Administrative Appeals Tribunal elevated the matter to be heard by a Federal Court Justice. At that time the PM also engaged a taxpayer funded Queens Counsel (QC) to represent him. About two weeks ago the date was set for a hearing – 19 May.

This week the PM became so worried I’m going to win that his QC introduced a fallback reason for denying me access to documents that doesn’t rely on Cabinet. Now the PM is saying that the ‘National Cabinet’ documents I’m seeking are purportedly secret because disclosing them would damage Federal-State relations.
Whilst Federal and State Governments are supposed to open and transparent with citizens, according to the PM this apparently changes when they get together to chat. Really?

I’m confident the PM will lose both claims – but the truth is I am really focussed on the National Cabinet secrecy claim because if I win that I will have put a stop to the PM’s abuse of power and unilateral fraud upon transparency.

Stop Bolsonaro destroying the Amazon rainforest!

Amazon Mining Destruction

Bolsonaro says it’s his ‘dream’ to open up the Amazon rainforest for mining, but for the Indigenous People who call it their home, it’s a nightmare.

Ripping up the land to mine for gold and diamonds will devastate the precious ecosystems and the Indigenous communities who have protected these sacred lands for years.

Bolsonaro wants to rush his plan through Congress in the next few weeks, so we have to act fast.

If we can show Brazil’s politicians that the whole world is watching as they’re deciding the Amazon’s fate, we can stop this senseless destruction.

Thirty years ago Brazil’s constitution put these Indigenous lands out of bounds.

But ever since Bolsonaro came to power, mining giants and small-time prospectors have been clamoring to get their hands on the Amazon’s treasures. Unless we stand-up and stop Bolsonaro’s plan, this could be their golden ticket.

This attack on these Indigenous Peoples’ lands is an attack on all of us. Our survival depends on the Amazon rainforest, and the Indigenous People that nurture it.

Now those fighting on the frontlines, like our allies at the Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil and the Pariri Indigenous Association need our help. Let’s stand with them in their hour of need.

Add your name: Stand with the Indigenous People of the Amazon!
