What comes to mind before you discard your banana peel? Certainly not the consideration of its use to reduce petroleum-based pollution and create bio-plastic, yet this is exactly what Elif Bilgin, 16, from Istanbul, Turkey, sought to achieve and successfully accomplished. Winner of the 2013 Science in Action award, Google’s third $50,000 annual competition, she addressed the need for environmentally friendly alternatives with practical resources and easy-to-attain banana peels.

Dishwashing Detergents – From Dr Anita Pepi
There is a film that remains on your dishes that finds its way into your body. I have seen patients get very ill from poorly rinsed, toxic dishwasher solvents. As most dishwasher detergents have toxins and dyes in them that can increase your cancer risk, who needs them?!
A healthier alternative is 1 – 2 teaspoons of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, which kills some germs and is the least toxic dishwasher detergent you will find. Do not use more than 2 tsp, as the dishes tend to spot.
To reduce germs further and avoid spotting, dissolve the baking soda with 3% hydrogen peroxide in your dish detergent tray.
Simple and inexpensive!
