For decades, the focus has been on liver damage and accidental overdoses. But the deeper story\u2014the one still hiding in plain sight\u2014is more disturbing:\u00a0<strong>even a single dose<\/strong>\u00a0of acetaminophen (Tylenol\u2019s active ingredient) measurably<strong>\u00a0blunts human empathy, dulls positive emotions, and increases risk-taking behavior.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just a matter of personal health.<strong>\u00a0It\u2019s a social and spiritual crisis.<\/strong>\u00a0If one-quarter of U.S. adults are taking Tylenol weekly, we may be medicating away our collective capacity for compassion.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"header-anchor-post\">Tylenol Blunts Emotions\u2014Good and Bad<\/h3>\n<p>In a landmark 2015\u00a0<em>Psychological Science<\/em>\u00a0study, titled\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4515109\/\" rel=\"\">\u201cOver-the-Counter Relief From Pains and Pleasures Alike,\u201d<\/a><\/em>\u00a0researchers at Ohio State University gave healthy adults<strong>\u00a0a single standard 1,000 mg dos<\/strong>e of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and then exposed them to emotionally charged images\u2014ranging from disturbing to uplifting.<\/p>\n<p>The outcome was unambiguous:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Disturbing images<\/strong>\u00a0were rated\u00a0<strong>less negatively<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uplifting images<\/strong>\u00a0were rated\u00a0<strong>less positively<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Across the board, participants reported\u00a0<strong>feeling less emotional arousal<\/strong>, even when viewing the most extreme stimuli.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brain research helps explain why: acetaminophen dampens activity in the\u00a0<strong>anterior insula<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>anterior cingulate cortex<\/strong>\u2014regions responsible for processing both physical pain and emotional resonance. These are the same circuits that allow us to feel empathy and to be moved by joy, awe, or sorrownihms703262.<\/p>\n<p>The authors concluded:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAcetaminophen attenuates individuals\u2019 evaluations and emotional reactions to negative and positive stimuli alike\u2026 Rather than being labeled merely a pain reliever, acetaminophen might be better described as an all-purpose emotion reliever.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/open.substack.com\/pub\/sayerji\/p\/tylenol-from-painkiller-to-empathy\">https:\/\/open.substack.com\/pub\/sayerji\/p\/tylenol-from-painkiller-to-empathy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Tom: I can personally attest to the emotion numbing effects of common medications. In 1995 I was prescribed asthma medication and thereafter felt a noticeably reduced ability to experience emotions.
