In a\u00a0Frontiers in Public Health<\/a>\u00a0review article, researchers report on the wide body of science connecting adverse effects to the female reproductive system, such as infertility, with exposure to\u00a0endocrine-disrupting chemicals<\/a>, or EDCs.<\/p>\n The authors call these effects a significant concern for public\u00a0health<\/a>, as there has been growing evidence of EDCs with risk factors for decreased fertility.<\/p>\n Infertility<\/a>\u00a0\u201caffects a substantial proportion of the world\u2019s population with approximately one in six people affected,\u201d the researchers note.<\/p>\n They continue:<\/p>\n \u201cOver the last 70 years, global fertility has been constantly in decline due to behavioral and societal changes \u2026 emerging evidence has shown that infertility incidence is linked to exposure to environmental factors such as tobacco, alcohol, and a wide range of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including pesticides (chlorpyrifos<\/a>,\u00a0glyphosate<\/a>, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane [DDT] and\u00a0methoxychlor<\/a>),\u00a0phthalates<\/a>,\u00a0polychlorinated biphenyls<\/a>\u00a0(PCB),\u00a0dioxins<\/a>, and\u00a0bisphenols<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n In this review, over 100 studies are summarized to showcase the link between EDC exposure and\u00a0reproductive effects<\/a>\u00a0in women, including infertility and related diseases such as endometriosis, premature ovarian insufficiency, or POI, and endocrine axis dysregulation.<\/p>\n
