{"id":48827,"date":"2024-01-14T16:41:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-14T05:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/?p=48827"},"modified":"2024-01-14T16:50:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-14T05:50:27","slug":"long-covid-fatigue-linked-to-malfunctioning-mitochondria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/?p=48827","title":{"rendered":"Long COVID fatigue linked to malfunctioning mitochondria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-48828\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bicycle_Wheels_and_Shadows-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Bicycle Wheels and Shadows\" width=\"905\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bicycle_Wheels_and_Shadows-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Bicycle_Wheels_and_Shadows.jpg 751w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At least\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(23)00493-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">65 million people<\/a>\u00a0around the world have\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/long-covid\">long COVID<\/a>, a condition where they continue to experience\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0symptoms for months after their symptoms originally start.<\/p>\n<p>The most common symptoms of long COVID are fatigue, dizziness, mobility issues, sleep problems, cognitive impairment, and brain fog or inability to concentrate.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsterdamumc.nl\/nl\/zorgverleners\/vugt-van-m.-prof.-dr..htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prof. Mich\u00e8le van Vugt<\/a>, professor of internal medicine at the Amsterdam University Medical Center and co-lead author of this study, told\u00a0<em>Medical News Today<\/em>\u00a0she and her colleagues decided to look for a physical cause of the tiredness experienced by people with long COVID because of the impact it has on their lives.<\/p>\n<p>For this study, Prof. van Vugt and her team recruited 25 people with long COVID and 21 healthy control participants. They were all asked to take a cycling test for approximately 15 minutes, that was designed to push them to maximum exertion.<\/p>\n<p>According to researchers, the cycling test caused a worsening of symptoms in the participants with long COVID, known as\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36911963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post-exertional malaise<\/a>\u00a0(PEM), resulting in worsening of fatigue for up to 7 days after.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists examined blood and muscle tissue samples from all participants both one week before the cycling test and one day after.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They found various abnormalities in the muscle tissue of the participants with long COVID, including lowered functioning of the\u00a0<a class=\"content-link css-1pg8eb5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK9896\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mitochondria<\/a>\u00a0of the muscle. Known as the \u201cpowerhouse of the cell,\u201d mitochondria are responsible for making the energy needed to power the body\u2019s cells.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the cause of the fatigue is really biological,\u201d Prof. van Vugt explained. \u201cThe brain needs energy to think. Muscles need energy to move.
