{"id":46235,"date":"2023-08-08T01:05:35","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T15:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/?p=46235"},"modified":"2023-08-08T01:05:35","modified_gmt":"2023-08-07T15:05:35","slug":"why-hide-the-plan-for-a-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tomgrimshaw.com\/tomsblog\/?p=46235","title":{"rendered":"Why Hide The Plan For A Treaty?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shouldn\u2019t Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the \u2018yes\u2019 campaign be proud of their promise of a treaty?<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve said often enough they\u2019re going to implement the Uluru Statement \u201cin full\u201d after the referendum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And that means a treaty and a \u201ctruth-telling\u201d commission after the divisive Voice is cemented into the Constitution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So why does Albo refuse to even say the word \u201ctreaty\u201d these past few weeks?<\/p>\n<p>What could they be hiding?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advanceaustralia.org.au\/r?u=fk3qs1mHicx9-w03tafB2G8vNGMp4KGcuuJPtVN2YhbsIoM8D3h629orlpiu0piPkGtU_VpDq9pbnX_yatVur_OZV-S_vmwioapC9dma59dqM7ACPFZI4M9-U7YpX38gcsXlYw6DVTmE8jv-8e6NsBCtDy6iGKxrCWE5N4fDolvibMhiY6p8iQoYr8xCRhyd&amp;e=8b7331501082a4ca945ed529930866d7&amp;utm_source=advanceaustraliaorgau&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=2023_08_06_fa_enews&amp;n=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Well, just take a look at this document, which solves the mystery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the Uluru Statement \u2026 in full.<\/p>\n<p>Is this what the PM and the \u2018yes\u2019 campaign have signed up for after this referendum?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230; a Treaty could include a proper say in decision-making, the establishment of a truth commission, reparations, a financial settlement (such as seeking a percentage of GDP), the resolution of land, water and resources issues, recognition of authority and customary law, and guarantees of respect for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While redacted parts appeared in the Final Report of the Referendum Council<sup>1<\/sup>, which referred to them as \u201cextracts from the Uluru Statement\u201d, the entire document was released under Freedom of Information laws.<\/p>\n<p>And reported by Sky News host Peta Credlin last week<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>This is how news.com.au told the story<sup>3<\/sup>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Taxpayers may be forced to pay \u201creparations\u201d to Indigenous Australians for \u201cpast, present and future criminal acts\u201d under a proposed treaty, with suggestions that \u201ca fixed percentage\u201d of GDP be handed over through \u201crates, land tax and royalties\u201d&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s that got to do with the divisive Voice, you might ask!<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u2018yes\u2019 campaigners will look you dead in the eye and \u2013 like the Prime Minister \u2013 swear the Voice has nothing to do with a treaty!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not what Thomas Mayo and Teela Reid, members of Albo\u2019s referendum advisory group, were saying before the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Mayo tweeted that without a Voice, Australians are \u201cmuch less likely to support what we may claim in a treaty (<strong>reparations, land back etc<\/strong>)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament will provide the <strong>political clout<\/strong> needed to <strong>enforce<\/strong> &amp;
