THE most important investing tip I learned from my time there was, \u201cInvest in your own income earning potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can only ever invest a portion of what you earn. If you earn 4 times as much you have a LOT more to invest!)<\/p>\n<p>Josh Gwin writes:<\/p>\n<p>in 2013 I had my money with a financial advisor.<\/p>\n<p>The market went up 27%.<\/p>\n<p>My investments went up 0%.<\/p>\n<p>I asked my guy why and he said, \u201cYou said you didn\u2019t want to lose money so I put you in very conservative investments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I started learning to manage my own investments the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s worked for me:<\/p>\n<p>Spend less than you earn.<br \/>\nInvest the difference in S&amp;P 500 index funds. I use VTSAX primarily.<br \/>\nKeep expenses ratio low (easy if you invest in index funds with no financial advisor).<br \/>\nAutomate your investing.<br \/>\nI have a percentage of every check I get automatically go to buy index funds.<br \/>\nAvoid any financial advisor that charges by assets under management (AUM).<br \/>\nRead Jim Collins stock series.<br \/>\nMarry the right person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Tom: There are some good tips below but I will trump them with this one.
