around one day<br \/>\nIn a women\u2019s clothing store<br \/>\nHe\u2019d found his wife a Christmas coat<br \/>\nAnd was headed for the door<br \/>\nWhen he bumped into a little boy<br \/>\nThat looked like he was lost<br \/>\nAnd he said \u201cMister can you help me<br \/>\nFind out how much something costs?<br \/>\nHere it is almost Christmas<br \/>\nAnd the nights are gettin&#8217; cold<br \/>\nWinter time is on us<br \/>\nAnd my mom don\u2019t have a coat<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been workin&#8217; for the neighbors<br \/>\nAnd saving for a time\u201d<br \/>\nAnd in his tiny outstretched hand<br \/>\nWas a dollar and a dime<br \/>\nHis gaze went from that big eyed boy<br \/>\nTo that pretty Christmas coat<br \/>\nAnd he finally cleared away the lump<br \/>\nThat had gathered in his throat<br \/>\nHe said \u201cSon<br \/>\nthat\u2019s just what this coat costs<br \/>\nWe\u2019re lucky that we found \u2018er\u201d<br \/>\nAnd he turned around and gave a wink<br \/>\nTo the lady at the counter<br \/>\nShe put it in a pretty box<br \/>\nAnd wrapped it up just so<br \/>\nAnd went off in the back<br \/>\nAnd found a big red Christmas bow<br \/>\nHe said \u201c I thank you for your help sir<br \/>\nAnd I kindly thank you ma\u2019am<br \/>\nI hope y\u2019all are gonna have a big Christmas<br \/>\nCause now I know I am\u201d<br \/>\nWell the old boy walked home busted<br \/>\nExcept for the dollar and the dime<br \/>\nThinkin&#8217; he\u2019d just have to buy<br \/>\nThe coat another time<br \/>\nHe told his wife that Christmas this year<br \/>\nWouldn\u2019t be much fun<br \/>\nAnd he gently took her in his arms<br \/>\nAnd told her what he\u2019d done<br \/>\nShe said \u201c why you old softie<br \/>\nI wouldn\u2019t trade you for a farm<br \/>\nI\u2019ve got two or three old coats<br \/>\nAnd your love to keep me warm \u201c<br \/>\nShe put that money in a matchbox<br \/>\nAnd placed it beneath their tree<br \/>\nAnd said \u201cthat is the grandest gift<br \/>\nYou\u2019ve ever given me\u201d<br \/>\nThe years went by like years will do<br \/>\nWhen people are in love<br \/>\nTheir marriage was a golden bond<br \/>\nThat was forged by God above<br \/>\nThen one day came some bitter news<br \/>\nThat filled his heart with fright<br \/>\nThe doctor told the old man\u2019s wife<br \/>\nThat she was going to lose her sight<br \/>\nHe said \u201cthere\u2019s an operation we can do<br \/>\nBut it puts me on the spot<br \/>\nCause it\u2019s a quite complex procedure<br \/>\nAnd it\u2019s going to cost a lot\u201d<br \/>\nThe old man said \u201cdoctor I\u2019m a failure<br \/>\nI\u2019ve made no preparation<br \/>\nWe don\u2019t have the money<br \/>\nFor that kind of an operation \u201c<br \/>\nThe doctor got the strangest look<br \/>\nAnd he sat there for a while<br \/>\nAnd then he slowly nodded<br \/>\nAnd he broke out in a smile<br \/>\nHe said \u201c why sir you can\u2019t fool me<br \/>\nYou\u2019re a very wealthy man<br \/>\nYou long ago invested<br \/>\nIn the world\u2019s best savings plan<br \/>\nI\u2019ll see she gets the best of care<br \/>\nShe\u2019s going to be just fine<br \/>\nAnd the total cost to you old friend<br \/>\nIs a dollar and a dime\u201d<br \/>\nThe old man stared in disbelief<br \/>\nThen he recognized that smile<br \/>\nThe one he\u2019d seen those years ago<br \/>\nOn a loving thoughtful child<br \/>\nHe said \u201cwhat you gave to me that day<br \/>\nWas more than just a coat<br \/>\nYou gave me the gift of giving<br \/>\nAnd you gave my mother hope<br \/>\nMy mother\u2019d been mistreated<br \/>\nNeglected and abused<br \/>\nBut she gave life just one more chance<br \/>\nAnd it was all because of you<br \/>\nNow every year she takes that coat<br \/>\nAnd lays it beneath our tree<br \/>\nIt represents to us the things<br \/>\nThat Christmas ought to be<br \/>\nShe says that when we leave this world<br \/>\nFor a better home someday<br \/>\nThe only things that we\u2019ll take with us<br \/>\nAre the things we gave away.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An old boy was fumblin&#8217;
