Ink on a page.<br \/>\nAnd their coffee.<br \/>\nA place to sit, on Pacific Avenue<br \/>\nout of the rain<br \/>\nand write.<br \/>\nIt was my version of<br \/>\nHemingway\u2019s \u201cclean, well-lighted place\u201d<br \/>\n(without the despair, loneliness<br \/>\nor nihilistic taint.)<br \/>\nThere is something that feels sacred<br \/>\nabout a repository of books<br \/>\nfor sale or not.<br \/>\nAnd Borders was one<br \/>\nof the places where<br \/>\nfrom time to time<br \/>\nI went to write, to peruse<br \/>\nand to wonder at<br \/>\nthe thoughts of others.<br \/>\nStacks of friends-in-paper<br \/>\nof like minds<br \/>\nor not.<br \/>\nA place to go, and touch pages.<br \/>\nTo stand in the lighted space, and feel<br \/>\nsmooth<br \/>\npaper beneath my fingertips.<br \/>\nAnd feel the words<br \/>\nof others<br \/>\nin my eyes.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not that I mind Amazon<br \/>\nor Kindle or Nook<br \/>\nand the like.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve shopped the pixel places<br \/>\nbut<br \/>\nthere is something holy about<br \/>\n\u201cthe bookstore\u201d<br \/>\nas an intersection of intellectual<br \/>\npathways.<br \/>\nA nexus.<br \/>\nA springboard of<br \/>\ndimensional collaboration.<br \/>\nIts occupants were literate.<br \/>\nThirsty for<br \/>\nwords.<br \/>\nCapable of considering<br \/>\nthe ideas of another in order to<br \/>\nreach the lofty places \u2013 the great open places in<br \/>\ntheir minds.<br \/>\nOr simply to scratch the itch<br \/>\nof curiosity.<br \/>\nI wonder if the Library at<br \/>\nAlexandria<br \/>\nwas like that<br \/>\nbefore it was sacked.<br \/>\n&#8212; Graves 10\/18\/14<\/p>\n<p>I am happy to announce that my book &#8220;Messages in a Bottle: Communications to My Future Self&#8221; took one of the top awards given by the Colorado Independent Publishers Association in 2018. She built the 3-D scenes in her living room on nights and weekends with the help of an assistant, with each one taking anywhere from two to fifteen months to complete.
