Recent evidence has shown that human endogenous retroviral transcripts are elevated in the brains of patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (Frank et al., 2005), in peripheral blood mononuclear leucocytes of patients with autism spectrum (Freimanis et al., 2010) as well as associated with several autoimmune diseases (Tai et al., 2008).
