Diet Quality, Food Groups and Nutrients Associated with the Gut Microbiota in a Nonwestern Population

Dr Peter Dingle writes:

This study confirms everything I have been telling you for years about creating a healthy microbiome. It all comes down to your diet. Diet plays an important role in shaping gut microbiota. Eat more plants and eat less processed foods and add fibre.

Microbial diversity was higher in individuals with increased intake of nutrients obtained from plant-food sources, whereas the intake of food groups and nutrients correlated with microbiota structure. Random-forest regressions identified microbial communities associated with different diet components.

Two remarkable results confirmed previous expectations regarding the link between diet and microbiota: communities composed of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producers were more prevalent in the microbiota of individuals consuming diets rich in fiber and plant-food sources, such as fruits, vegetables and beans. In contrast, an inflammatory microbiota composed of bile-tolerant and putrefactive microorganisms along with opportunistic pathogens thrived in individuals consuming diets enriched in animal-food sources and of low quality, i.e., enriched in ultraprocessed foods and depleted in dietary fiber. This study expands our understanding of the relationship between dietary intake and gut microbiota. We provide evidence that diet is strongly associated with the gut microbial community and highlight generalizable connections between them.

Diabetes drug metformin recalled due to high levels of cancer-causing agent

Metformin

The drug’s manufacturer, Marksans Pharma Limited, has expanded a recall initially announced in June to now include an additional 76 unexpired lots of the medication.

The recalled drugs are marketed as “extended-release tablets” under the brand name Time-Cap Labs, Inc.

The recalled product contained an unacceptably high level of N-Nitrosodimethylamine, which is considered a probable human carcinogen.

Human Rights Video #27: Copyright

One of my principle concerns with the current scene is the rapidly escalating speed with which human rights are being trampled. The lack of peace in certain regions is proof positive that these principles are actually valid and needed, more than ever.

This trend needs to be reversed. The entrance point is educating people that they do have rights. Hence this post and the request you share these posts so more people are aware of and insist upon their rights so that we can live in a peaceful society.

Watch the video and if you think so too, please share it!

Do you know it is a fundamental right of yours to have your own opinion? You would not think so from the way some people (including the government) try to belittle you for disagreeing with them but it is.

Don’t Dis Google!

Don't Dis Google!

OK, ready for today’s chuckle?

You may have seen a post where a doctor disparages the use of Google to help with a medical issue. Now this is not to be taken as a recommendation to ditch doctors and rely on Google for your medical diagnoses, despite the fact that when doctors go on strike the death rate plummets.

Time To Make An Apple and Rhubarb Pie!

Rhubarb Fat Mass Graph

Study shows rhubarb supplement prevents obesity and promotes the good bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila (the same one that increases with metformin)

Rhubarb supplementation fully prevented HFHS-induced obesity, diabetes, visceral adiposity, adipose tissue inflammation and liver triglyceride accumulation, without any modification in food intake. By combining sequencing and qPCR methods, we found that all these effects were associated with a blooming of Akkermansia muciniphila, which is strongly correlated with increased expression of Reg3y in the colon.

This data showed that rhubarb supplementation is sufficient to protect against metabolic disorders induced by a diet rich in lipid and carbohydrates in association with an increase in Akkermansia muciniphila.

Average body temperature among healthy adults declining

In the nearly two centuries since German physician Carl Wunderlich established 98.6°F (37 C) as the standard “normal” body temperature, it has been used by parents and doctors alike as the measure by which fevers—and often the severity of illness—have been assessed.

Over time, however, and in more recent years, lower body temperatures have been widely reported in healthy adults. A 2017 study among 35,000 adults in the United Kingdom found average body temperature to be lower (97.9°F / 36.6 C), and a 2019 study showed that the normal body temperature in Americans (those in Palo Alto, California, anyway) is about 97.5°F (36.4 C).
